So, you've come to Northern California and you want to surf, eh? Well, you are in luck. Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz is supposedly THE best place to learn how to surf in all of California. Yes I find that difficult to believe as well, but it has been said numerous times.

Truth be told, it IS an awesome place to learn. The water is warm(er) and clean, and the waves come on a regular basis and are never too big. They also are legitimate waves, in that they break right, so even seasoned surfers can enjoy a ride.

There are multiple surf schools that instruct in the water there, so getting a lesson and renting a board are not a problem either. It is pretty much ideal.

The one drawback is of course the masses. Given it's reputation, Cowell's draws tons of people, especially in the summer. At times the lineup can be 50 wide and 5 deep, with even more throngs all the way into beach. Getting a foam top board in the ankles is to be expected.

All in all though, it is worth checking out.
